Local Area Network

  Local Area Network

Just as the name implies, a local area network (LAN) is usually restricted to spanning a particular geographic location such as an office building, a single department within a corporate office, or even a home office.
Back in the day, you couldn't put more than 30 workstation on LAN, and you had to cope with strict limitations on how far those machines could actually be from each other. Because of  technological advance, all that's changed  now, and we're not nearly as restricted in regard to both a LAN size and the distance a LAN can span. Even so, it's still best to split a big LAN into smaller logically zones know as workgroups to make administration easier.
  • LAN's enable the sharing of resources such as files, hardware devices that may be needed by multiple users.
  • LAN is limited in size, typically spanning a few hundred meters, and no more than a mile.
  • Is fast, with speeds from 10 Mbps to 10 Gbps.
  • Requires little wiring, typically a single cable connecting to each device.
  • Has lower cost compared to MAN’s or WAN’s.

  • LAN’s can be either wired or wireless. Twisted pair, coax or fiber optic cable can be used in wired LAN’s.
  • Every LAN uses a protocol – a set of rules that govern show packets are configured and transmitted.
  • Nodes in a LAN are linked together with a certain topology. These typologies include:
    – Bus
    – Ring
    – Star
